In discussing his whereabouts on August 8, 1985 with a group of reporters, President Reagan stated “I’d like to ask one question of everybody... Everybody who can remember what they were doing on August 8, 1985, raise your hand.” Not a hand went up that I know of except mine.

Park Elementary, Corning Middle School, and Corning High School Odyssey of the Mind Teams are headed to State. The Delta Regional (State Qualifier) Odyssey of the Mind Tournament was held at Greene County Tech on Saturday, March 5th. Teams from around the area including Pocahontas, Greene County Tech, Brookland, Valley View, Trumann, Tuckerman, Marianna, Earle, Blytheville, and more competed. Marcy Selig, Gifted and Talented teacher for the Corning School District explained the awards won by the Corning OM teams as the following: In the Classics, The Musical Production, CMS Problem 3 Division 1 received 4th place honors, CMS Problem 3 Division 2 received 1st place, and CMS Problem 3 Division 3 also received 1st place honors. Life is a Circus, Problem 5, Park Elementary Division 1 received 2nd place honors and CMS Division 2 also received 2nd place honors. CMS Problem 5 Division 2 also received an OMER award for overcoming adversity when their music failed to play. These students will compete in the state Odyssey of the Mind Tournament on April 9th in Mayflower, Arkansas.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller reports that on the evening of March 8, 2022 at approximately 8:25 p.m. Clay County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a possible homicide on Highway 49 just east of Rector. Upon deputies’ arrival, a male victim identified as Matthew Hale was found to be deceased. Sheriff Miller has requested assistance from the Arkansas State Police in the investigation. ASP CID investigators processed the scene and collected evidence at the residence. The investigation is ongoing and the body is being sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab. Sheriff Miller urges anyone with information on this incident to contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at 870-598-2270.

The Lady Bobcats’ season came to an end at Regionals on Feb. 27 in Rosebud with a loss against the Mountain View Lady Yellowjackets; 56 - 34. The Lady Cats had a great season with a 19-6 record, earning the title of Conference Champions and a ticket to the Regionals. The loss at Regionals was the last high school basketball game for senior Makenna Lunsford. The Lady Cats have a bright future when they return in 2022-2023 with four starters from this championship team.

Members of Girl Scout Troop #3012 sold Girl Scout cookies on the Dollar General parking lot on Feb. 28 after school. The troop also sold cookies on the 10Box parking lot on Feb. 27. The girls will be selling cookies for two more weeks. Contact a girl scout or Megan Owens to purchase cookies.

Weight control remains one of the top New Year’s goals for many adults in the US. With over 71% of adults being overweight or obese, weight control should be front and center. Being overweight or obese raises the risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses.

Corning is the new home of 1st Choice Home Care, a private care agency devoted to providing in-home care services for Seniors and disabled individuals throughout Northeast Arkansas, ranging in age from infants to the elderly. The business also has locations in Paragould, Jonesboro, Manila, Truman, and Newport. Its Corning location is on Main Street across from Legacy Equipment. They will soon open a seventh location in Mountain Home.

The House will begin the 3rd week of the 2022 Fiscal Session on Monday. The second week was an abbreviated one due to the federal holiday and winter weather across the state.
