Dixon to seek position as District 1 lawmaker

Steve Dixon, mayor of the City of Marmaduke has announced his intention to seek the office of Arkansas State Representative serving District One as a Republican. The office is currently served by Rep. Joe Jett – R, who announced this week he would not be running in the next election. In a formal statement Dixon said, “I have the desire to serve the citizens of this district in a larger capacity than just the City of Marmaduke. I feel that my experience as council member and as mayor has helped me to be qualified for this position as a state lawmaker. I consider myself to be moderate conservative.”

FIRST SNOWFALL OF WINTER . . .

Corning residents woke up to a snow-covered ground on Thursday morning, Jan. 6 and the first snow of the winter. Residents in the area received 1-2 inches of snow depending upon their location. Students had their first AMI day after the Corning School District closed due to road conditions and some children enjoyed playing in the snow while it lasted.

ADE Selects 72 Applications to Receive $2.5 Million for New CTE Programs

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Department of Education is pleased to announce that 72 applications have been selected to receive approximately $2.5 million in Career and Technical Education State Start-up Grants to assist with the development of new CTE programs of study. Of that amount, the ADE Office of Computer Science Education is providing $144,000 to CTE to fund five additional applications that have a computer science focus.

Catching up with Bobcat alumna Makayla Ward

Former Lady Bobcat Makayla Ward signed with the Crowley’s Ridge College Lady Pioneers on April 21, 2021 in the Corning High School gymnasium. So far this season she has made seven appearances for the Pioneers. CRC Sports Infor mation Director Dustin Semore reported she has played 19 minutes and is 2-6 from the floor. She has tallied five rebounds, one assist, and one block.

Carlos Lester

Mr. Carlos Lester, 80, of Corning, passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at Randolph County Nursing Home in Pocahontas. Mr. Lester was born in Corning on December 15, 1941. He was retired from the Arkansas Highway Police where he served for 33 years. He was also a former Corning Police Officer and an electrician. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during Vietnam. He was a certified fire-arms instructor, he enjoyed woodworking, electronics, camping, building model ships, and flying drones. He was a member of the First General Baptist Church in Corning.

Garland Arnell

Mr. Garland Arnell, 75, of Corning, AR. passed away January 7, 2022 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, MO. Mr. Arnell was born in Datto, AR., on September 30, 1946 He was a retired mechanic. He enjoyed fishing, rebuilding cars, baseball, going to church and spending time with family. He was a member of the Corning Masonic Lodge #719, he was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner.
