City approved for CARES grant

Issues affecting city employees discussed

The Corning City Council met for their Nov. meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center. With all members of the city council present they approved minutes of the previous meeting, Income and Expense Reports, and Purchase Orders and bills payable. City Attorney Alex Bigger was absent. Attending the council meeting was Attorney Ryan Wallace, who has been a deputy prosecuting attorney in the 3rd Judicial District covering Randolph, Lawrence, Jackson and Sharp counties. The attorney has shown interest in becoming Corning’s City Attorney when Bigger leaves at the end of the year to serve as Randolph County District Judge.

Mayor Greg Ahrent addressed the Old Business of the drainage project. He said the contracts were signed for the project and according to the engineer, Ben DeClerk, hopefully the equipment would be moved in next week.

In New Business, City Clerk J’Anna Couch brought up the fact that minimum wage is set to increase to $11 in January 2021 for all the minimum wage employees. “We're proposing a dollar increase for all full and part-time employees, including salaried. The fill-in employees, we're not making that part of it as far as the dollar increase that would be like, just fill-ins for the police department or dispatch or something like that.” Couch went on to say, “Almost all of the part-time are minimum wage anyway.”
